What is a spouse visa?

The spouse visa, also known as the partner and spouse visa, allows qualified foreign nationals to reside with their partner in the UK if their partner is a British citizen or a settled individual (such as someone with Indefinite Leave to Remain or EU Settled Status). Marriage to a British citizen does not grant automatic residency rights in the UK. To live in the UK with your partner, you must apply for a Spouse Visa. Eligible applicants include those who are married, in a civil partnership, or unmarried.

Criteria for a spouse visa

For a UK partner and spouse visa application to be successful, you must fulfil specific eligibility criteria and provide evidence demonstrating that:

• You are in a genuine and eligible relationship.

• Your combined gross annual income with your partner meets or exceeds £29,000 (implemented on 11th April 2024). This is scheduled to increase in the future by gradual increments up to £38,700.

• You have appropriate accommodation available in the UK.

• You meet the English language proficiency requirement, attaining at least level A1 for your initial visa application.
