What is a student visa?

A student visa allows international students to come to the UK for authorised educational purposes. The student visa is intended for individuals aged 16 and above, while the child student visa is for those under 18. A student aged 16 to 17 can choose between the student visa or the child student visa.

Criteria for a student visa

You are eligible for a student visa if:

• You hold an unconditional offer of admission from an institution listed as an approved sponsor.

• You possess appropriate academic qualifications for your chosen course of study.

• You can provide support for any accompanying family members or dependents that join you.

• You demonstrate sufficient financial capability to sustain yourself throughout your studies.

If you are applying for a Student Visa from outside the UK, your application typically takes around 3 weeks to process. You can submit your application up to 6 months prior to the start of your course.

Inside the UK:

For those applying for a Student Visa within the UK, the processing time is approximately 8 weeks. You can start your application up to 3 months before your course begins
